Tesla Korea has opened its first showroom on Wednesday. It is located at the Starfield shopping mall in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province.

It showcased the Model S 90D, which is a luxury electric vehicle (EV) sedan. Shinsegae Group Vice Chairman Chung Yong-jin, the first person to own a Tesla vehicle in the nation, also paid a visit to the showroom with Tesla Vice President Nicolas Villeger.

People seem to have divided opinions about the Model S 90D, though. This comes event though it boasts of darting acceleration performance.

"It's gorgeous, but I think the vehicle is just too expensive," a showroom visitor said. "Without the government's consumer subsidies for EVs worth up to 20 million won, the model is as expensive as German premium Mercedes-Benz's S-class vehicles. I don't think motorists would choose the Tesla Model S 90D over the S-class cars."

The environment ministry and provincial governments provide subsidies of up to 19 million won for EV purchases. However, Model S customers may not be able to benefit from this as the sedan failed to meet the requirements.

The requirements included the fact that any vehicle should take less than 10 hours to charge on a 7 kilowatt-hour low-speed charger. Tesla's Model S 90D's 90 kWh lithium-ion battery takes around 13 hours to fully charge.

Tesla Korea has announced that it will build charging stations across the country to prepare for the Model S 90D's release by June. The company is installing two types of stations. One is the high-speed supercharger while the other is the slow-speed destination charger.

The automobile company has almost completed the destination chargers in the Shinsegae Department store in Gangnam as well as the Yeoju Premium Outlets in Gyeonggi Province.

There are five or six destination chargers that are currently being built. The one in Gangnam Shinsegae Department store is believed to be the largest Tesla charging station in South Korea. Meanwhile, the Yeosu Premium Outlets are said to have three destination chargers.
