Three universities from South Korea have nabbed spots in Times Higher Education's Asia University Rankings for 2017. The schools were able to get the eighth, ninth and tenth spots on the list.

Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) got the eighth spot on the list. Last year, the institution was the tenth best university in Asia. For the 2016-2017 World University rankings, KAIST took the 89th place.

Seoul National University came in ninth place for this year's Asia University Ranking by Times Higher Education. It got the same ranking as last year and placed 72nd for the World University rank for 2016-2017.

In tenth place is Pohang University of Science and Technology. Last year, it was in eighth place but fell two places this year. The university was on the 104th spot for the World University Ranking 2016-2017.

Singapore nabbed the top spot on the list. National University of Singapore continues to be the number one university in Asia for two years. It is followed by China's Peking University in second place.

Another university from China got third place: Tsinghua University. Singapore's second institution on the list came in fourth place, Nanyang Technological University.

Hong Kong has two institutions on the list as well. The University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology got the fifth and sixth places, respectively.

Japan has only one institution on the list. The University of Tokyo retained its place at the seventh spot from last year's Asia University rankings.

Outstanding colleges and universities which are expected to become leading higher education institutions in the future years come from Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan and Thailand. Thailand has the most representatives with 10 universities in total. It is led by Mahidol University which is in 97th place.

It was noted that Malaysia has the greatest potential among the rising higher education institutions. The Southeast Asian country has seven institutions on the top 200 places. It saw an increase of four from last year.
