The launch of AMD's new line of desktop CPUs, Ryzen based on the company's Zen architecture, has made a big impact on the CPU market due to the CPUs' remarkable capabilities and performance output. It has also been a great choice for CPU builders as the Ryzen CPUs are faster and cheaper compared to their Intel counterparts.

The Ryzen CPUs are based on a new architecture and also paired with a new platform (AM4). Hence, compatibility issues with the CPU and motherboard are rather common than not. Some of these issues are limitation of memory, disabled OC for some motherboards, among others.

The year 2017 is the comeback year for AMD as the company will be releasing server CPUs sometime in the second quarter this year. Naples, a code name for AMD's new line of server CPUs, will also be based on AMD's Zen architecture just like Ryzen but utilized in a much bigger scale.

The Naples server CPU will feature 32 cores with Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) or 64 threads. If applied in a dual-processor platform (2P), the system can have as many as 64 cores and 128 threads. Naples CPUs can handle 4 dual-channel memory slots per CPU socket making a total of 8 dual-channels or 16 DIMM slots if ran in a 2P. Naples uses DDR4-2400Mhz with a maximum memory capability up to 4 Terabytes.

Looking at PCI Express lanes, the new Naples server CPUs can hold up to 128 PCI Express lanes. This leaves Intel behind with their current Xeon X5 v4 CPUs with only 80 PCI Express lanes. AMD's Naples can also be coupled with the powerful Radeon Instinct GPUs based on the Vega architecture.

AMD has not yet released an official statement regarding Naples' pricing. However, based on Ryzen's pricing against its Intel counterparts, AMD will surely take their spot in the data center market.
