MEXICO - In a recent monthly sales report, South Korea's automobile companies, Hyundai Motor Corporation and Kia Motors Corporation, are among the top 10 best selling car brands in Mexico.

According to the data gathered by Mexican Auto Industry Association on Wednesday, Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors have a combined monthly sales of 5,573 units for January 2016, surpassing Mexico's 5,000 mark for the first time since they entered the Latin America's market.

Separately, Hyundai sold 2,462 units, making it ranked at 10th place. Kia, on the other hand, has more sales with 3,110 units, ranking at ninth place.

Kia Motors previously placed at No. 11 spot in July 2015, when it first got into Mexico. It climbed up two places to ninth place after six months.

The giant car makers in South Korea have a combined market share of 4.7 percent for January 2016, The Economic Daily reports.

From May 2014 to June 2015, Hyundai Motor Corporation was the only available Korean car brand for sale in Mexico. Apparently, the company had a market share around one to two percent.

But when Kia Motors came to the country's market scene, the shares of the two companies had increased up to three percent in late 2015. They reached the four percent mark just last month.

The strong performance of Kia has exceeded that of Hyundai's when it came to market share, ranking and sales volume due to the former's minivans and sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

The company's monthly sales of Sportage increased from 1,000 of the previous year to 1,500 in January this year. Sorento, another Kia SUV, has also gone up to 650 units from 400 of the same month.

In December 2015, however, neither one of the South Korean companies made it to top 10. Michigan-based Chevrolet took the top spot of Mexico's best selling cars, leading with the Aveo model.

Nissan's Versa and Pick-up were on second and third places, respectively. Meanwhile, Volkswagen's Vento and Jetta had the fourth and fifth ranks, respectively, according to the report of Focus2Move.
