Following after the footsteps of Samsung, Xiaomi is also dropping the invite to be part of the Mobile World Congress 2017. The upcoming event is one of the biggest mobile conferences every year. However, the Mi5 creator is not attending.

Tech Crunch Asia reports that a spokesperson has confirmed the news: Xiaomi is skipping MWC 2017. According to the outlet, analysts and fans did not expect this announcement from the phone maker. It was initially expected that the manufacturer will make an appearance in the event.

Last year, Xiaomi introduced the Mi5 to the public through the Mobile World Congress. While the Mi5 did not grab too much attention compared to the phones that Apple and Samsung released in 2016, the MWC helped get the manufacturer's message across.

It can be safe to assume that Xiaomi's decision to skip this year's big telecom industry conference was affected by Hugo Barra's exit from the company. Barra announced through a Facebook post earlier this week that he will be leaving the company after the Chinese New Year.

On the other hand, another reason that could be keeping Xiaomi from attending the event is it probably doesn't have new smartphones or devices to unveil yet. Previous rumors suggested that the Mi6 might be launched around the same time when the Mobile World Congress 2017 kicks off. However, it seems that Xiaomi is not yet ready to unveil the anticipated phone at this point, thus the decision to skip the event.

Meanwhile, there are also rumors suggesting that Xiaomi may not be working on the Mi6 yet. However, GSM Arena notes that the Mi5s Plus is just a few months old so it's not uncommon that its creator is not yet dropping news about the development of the Mi6.

Xiaomi is considered as the world's 4th biggest smartphone provider. It also creates laptops and other gadgets. It is expected that more news about the company's upcoming devices for 2017 will be announced in the coming months.
