For the past few years, the majority of CPU sales belong to Intel with AMD their closest rival lagging behind. But with the upcoming Ryzen CPU from AMD, the battle between the two rivals might get more interesting this 2017.

AMD's Ryzen is set for release sometime in the first quarter of 2017, but information regarding the new processors have been scarce. Ryzen has displayed some benchmarks in their presentation but these have yet to be confirmed as the products haven't been released to the public. Forbes.com has the latest details on the new line of processors.

One of the only known details on Ryzen is that the processors will come in three tiers, namely the SR3, SR5 and the SR7. But rumors suggest that the line up will come in only 2 variants being either 4-core or 8-core products.

This would mean that AMD will not offer a mid tier 6 core processor which would be a surprise as Intel's 6 core processor is popular with enthusiasts using the X99. AMD will now offer two additional cores and four additional threads over Intel's Core i7 7700K.

In addition, AMD's processors will likely be cheaper than their Intel counterparts while offering more in terms of cores and threads. All of the new processors also have the option of overclocking which is a counter to Intel with only having specific models with such feature.

Intel has been quite overconfident in their years of dominance as they have provided little upgrade to their succeeding generations of processors. Previous and current generations of the i5 still feature 4 cores while i3 has had 2 cores ever since then. To combat this, AMD is expected to have 4 cores on their entry level CPU and 8 cores on their mid tier cards.

What's more, AMD still hasn't revealed their flagship video card Vega which will sure tip the scales on their favor. Stay tuned for more updates.
