Snapchat is looking to expand their social media platform by venturing to the TV business. The latest TV show coming to Snapchat will reportedly be 'Planet Earth' which will launch on Feb 17, 2017.

BBC, the company behind 'Planet Earth' as well as Snap announced on Monday that the popular travel documentary will launch six exclusive mini episodes of the upcoming season of Planet Earth. Planet earth will launch inside Snapchat's Discover section beginning Feb 17, 2017.

Each episode will last around four to six minutes and will first debut on the app a day before the the episodes will air on TV in the US. Planet Earth on Snapchat will air alongside ads. It was not specified however if Snapchat and BBC will be splitting ad revenue or the licensing of the content.

In the past, Snapchat is known to share revenue with their publishers. It was just recently that the tech company started to license their own products. Since this is a new venture for the tech company, revenue is still low as it only made up about 14 percent of the total revenue in 2016. But with the recent acquisition of Planet Earth, Snapchat is seeing potential in the TV business and is looking to invest more on it.

Snapchat has actually focused on tying up with TV shows in the past six months. Since then, besides the Planet Earth acquisition, the tech company has inked deals to create shows tied to actual TV shows like The Bachelor and The Voice.

The company will also be facing competition from other social media companies as they have started adding TV content to their platform. Facebook is already exploring how to integrate their platform while watching TV. Twitter on the other hand has been streaming their own TV shows for a few months now. But with Planet Earth, Snapchat has a legitimate chance of competing with these companies.

Snapchat is one of the more popular documentaries now. It currently has a 9.5 rating on IMDB with 100,000 reviews. The Planet Earth 2 preview meanwhile has more than nine million views on youtube.
