South Korean car maker Hyundai Motor Co. said Wednesday that its Hyundai Ioniq electric vehicle has been named the greenest car in the United States.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) said the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric was selected to be in its Greenest Vehicles of 2017 list for the greenest cars in the United States. In that list of environmentally friendly vehicles, Hyundai's electric vehicle was ranked first, according to Hyundai Motor Co. Wednesday.

The list was posted on the non-profit organization's website that showed Hyundai Ioniq on top, then followed by its global rivals the BMW i3 and the Toyota Prius Eco.

The Greenest Vehicles of 2017 compiles a list of the 12 most environmentally friendly vehicles available in the market this model year and they are ranked using a scoring system. Scores take into account manufacturing, emissions from driving and the vehicle's eventual recycling.

The Hyundai Ioniq, which was introduced in early 2016, also comes in all-electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid electric versions.

The ACEEE said Ioniq's number one ranking was "quite a feat" given as a midsize sedan, it is the largest car to top the list dominated in the last 10 years by compact or subcompact vehicles.

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric garnered a Green Score of 64. Despite its other versions the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and Ioniq Blue getting a Green Score of 59 and 62, respectively, only the configuration of each nameplate with the highest score is included in the list.

The other South Korean-made vehicle to make it to the list is the Kia Soul Electric, which ranked seventh. Kia Motors Corp. is an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Co.

The Ioniq model line-up will start arriving at US dealerships this month. The base price of the Ioniq hybrid is $23,035, which is more than $2,500 cheaper than the least expensive Toyota Prius.
