LG Display Co. maintained its top spot last month in global shipments of liquid crystal displays for TVs, according to industry data released Friday.

Despite global shipments of LCD TV panels declined to 19.88 million sheets or down 8 percent on-month in January, the LCD TV panel shipments by the South Korean display maker climbed to 4.28 million sheets or up 5 percent on-month, according to industry tracker WitsView.

The shutdown of factories by Taiwanese and Chinese display makers during the weeklong Lunar New Year holiday season was cited for the decline in global shipments.

Data provider WitsView, a unit of TrendForce, said in December that LG Display's TV panel shipment in November reached around 4.95 million, up 8.4 percent from the previous month.

LG Display's November shipments showed the rising demand in China for large-size and UHD TV panels. The company's shipments of products sized 55 inches and bigger rose 13 percent on average from the previous month, the report showed.

Also, UHD resolution products accounted for 45 percent of LG Display's TV panel shipments in November, according to WitsView.

Last month, LG Display reported a record operating profit in the fourth quarter of 904.3 billion won primarily because of the rise in panel prices.

The world's largest liquid crystal display maker said the profit was boosted by a favorable currency exchange rate and rising panel prices.

The price of TV LCDs bigger than 32 inches has been on the upward trend for 10 months, according to WitsView last month.

Analysts also cited supply-side factors for the rising prices such as South Korean panel maker Samsung Display Co. Ltd's closure of an LCD fabrication plant in 2016, which resulted in tight supply and demand conditions.

The January increase in shipments helped LG Display grow its share of the global market for LCD TV panels to 22 percent in January from 19 percent in the earlier month. Samsung Display ranked fifth in January with 2.88 million sheets.
