South Korean figure skater Choi Da-bin has won the Women's short program in figure skating at the Asian Winter Games on Thursday. This comes after she placed fifth at last week's Four Continents.

ESPN reported that Choi Da-bin opened her act with a triple lutz-triple toe loop combination. She also added a triple flip and double axel, which got 61.30 points in total. Japan's Rika Hongo got second place with 60.98 points and, in third place, was Zhao Ziquan of China with 58.90.

The women's short program at the Asian Winter Games featured skaters from non-traditional figure skating countries. This included Zahra Lari from the United Arab Emirates and Tasya Putri from Indonesia.

Choi was a last-minute replacement for Park So-Youn, who withdrew due to her ankle injury. According to USA Today, she also won the gold medal in women's figure skating on Saturday.

She performed with music from Doctor Zhivago and was able to land all her jumps neatly. One exception was a triple salchow which she under-rotated. She received a total of 187.54 points.

"The first half of this season was difficult," Choi said. "But as the season went on, I started to get better and better and this is a very satisfying way to end things."

China's Li Zijun of China came in second place with 175.60 points. In third place is Elizabet Tursynbaeva of Kazakhstan with 175.04.

Several Japanese top female figure skaters were unable to take part in the event. Satoko Miyahara got injured and Kaori Sakamoto, Japan junior champion, withdrew because of the flu.

North Korea won its first medal of the games earlier as Ryom Tae Ok and Kim Ju Sik placed third in the figure skating pairs event. They received 112.18 points in Saturday's free skating for a total of 177.40.

China's Yu Xiaoyu and Zhang Hao nabbed first place with 223.88 points. They are followed by compatriots Peng Cheng and Jin Yang with 197.06.
