Samsung is scrambling to recover from its failure with the Galaxy Note 7, starting with a new division for product quality.

Samsung Electronics announced on Thursday that it had created a division for the enhancement of its product quality.

According to a statement released by the company, "President Kim Jong-ho, a top manufacturing expert, will lead product quality and manufacturing improvement efforts for all of Samsung Electronics' set businesses."

Kim graduated with an electrical engineering degree from Soongsil University. He became the president of Samsung Heavy Industries Co Ltd., the company's shipbuilding affiliate, in 2016. Prior to that, he worked for more than three decades as a mobile business executive focused on manufacturing at Samsung Electronics. His new position will have him reporting directly to Kwon Oh-Hyun, Chief Executive of Samsung Electronics.

The establishment of a global product quality improvements office is just the latest in a series of steps Samsung has taken in its bid to regain consumer trust. The company suffered a massive hit to its reputation when a defect in its Galaxy Note 7 phones caused the devices to explode or catch fire. The scandal and resulting recall were said to have cost the company about 6.1 trillion won ($5.35 billion) in operating profit.

The move to create a new division focused on quality control didn't come as a surprise for most analysts. After all, quality control is the key factor in winning back users' confidence. It's something that Samsung Electronics' mobile head, Koh Dong-jin, clearly understood when he vowed that there would be increased focus on product integrity to avoid similar incidents from happening again.

A shake-up in the company was also inevitable after the Note disaster and the management scandals that the company is currently embroiled in. The dissolution of Samsung's Future Strategy Office was the first sign that the company was determined to salvage its image and standing.
